What depends on the patient in the choice of treatment?

What depends on the patient in the choice of treatment?
Can the patient choose something in the treatment, or does something depend on him. We asked - we answer.

If the disease has several treatment options, the doctor should ideally tell you about all of them. His story should contain information about:

  • stages and duration of treatment;
  • advantages and disadvantages of a specific treatment option;
  • possible risks.

Based on the received information, the PATIENT makes the decision on how to be treated (and whether to be treated at all). And this decision is his responsibility. One of the most disliked phrases of patients in this context from doctors is “Doctor, what would you choose in my place?”
The doctor’s job is to give you all the information you need. The decision is up to you.

— For example, with chronic periodontitis, a patient has several approaches to treatment, — says Sirius-Dent chief doctor Denis Valkevich. — Sometimes it happens that treating a tooth therapeutically is risky and unlikely. For example, when the canals in the teeth are too crooked, there is an extensive inflammatory process around the tooth, or the tooth was previously treated but unsuccessfully.
We go to the patient and explain: this is the situation, we can treat the root canals and try to save the tooth. It is not a fact that it will bring a positive medical centeral result, but we will try.
If you do not want to experiment, but want to solve this issue quickly and radically, you can immediately go to the surgical stage, without resorting to an attempt at therapeutic treatment.
We show the X-ray to the patient. And the patient himself decides which tactics to choose.

In addition, the patient makes certain decisions regarding specific stages of treatment. For example, the doctor can consult with you about the date of the operation (so that in the first week after the operation you do not have any formal events where you need to look good and not have swelling on the cheek).
